With groups creating programs to encourage females to consider STEM, what is the biggest barrier to entry that is still prevalent today?
Women need a coach, mentor or champion. Someone they can talk to, someone that believes in them enough to constantly encourage them. There is too much pressure today to be everything and do everything, relationships, families, careers combined with the desire to always be perfect. With the explosion of social media and smart phones someone is always watching. The right mentor/champion is encouraging and supportive through it all.
What or who inspires you?
My inspiration comes from people close to me. My dad, my professor, my boss, my daughters, each, at different times in my journey, have inspired me to do more, try harder, explore new areas and aim high.
What is your proudest moment/accomplishment?
I am proud of the path my life has taken and many moments and accomplishments along the way but I don’t believe I’ve hit my single proudest moment yet. Being a wife, friend and mother with a successful career is constantly rewarding and challenging. Proud moments often come when you least expect it. I find the little unexpected things make the biggest impact, the writing assignments my daughters submit, their determination when they play sports, follow ups from those I’ve mentored or supported in the past.
