With groups creating programs to encourage females to consider STEM, what is the biggest barrier to entry that is still prevalent today?
The biggest barrier today is that successful women leaders in STEM are still a drastic minority. Most executive meetings, conferences speakers and board rooms are almost entirely lacking women. It's hard to imagine yourself doing something without seeing someone like you in that role. The absence also means there's less advocacy, mentorship, sponsorship and support encouraging girls and women to join those ranks and keeping them successful in those roles.
What or who inspires you?
I'm inspired by creative and simple solutions to complicated problems. In our lives today there are so many sophisticated ways to solve problems. They often involve complex systems and technology while the basic may be overlooked. I encourage others to draw out a potential solution on paper before diving into solving as there may be an easier method. Prevent overanalyzing or misinterpreting an instruction by simply having a conversation. Visit a local design museum and take inspiration from clever solutions. Our world is only going to get more complex with even more data inputs and noise. To be successful we need to refine our ability to focus and problem solve, simply.
What is your proudest moment/accomplishment?
My proudest accomplishment is raising my four wonderful children. As accomplishments go, it's still a work in progress as they range from baby to 8 years but they amaze, challenge and teach me on a daily basis. At work and in life, I believe that I'm more productive, more patient, a better story teller and a better leader because of them.
